Comments - Should They Be Allowed On Blogs?
Should you allow comments to be made on your blog? I have read that some blog are better off without comments and the subscription rate actually increase. However, I disagree with turning off the comment system and it should be left on and here is why I believe that.
1. Commenting is the Best Way For Readers to Communicate With You
With your comment system, you allow your readers to easily communicate with you and give their opinions. You will have to deal with spam and negative comments, but rarely do you get those and there is plug-in to delete spam anyway. Without comments, the only way your readers can talk to you is via email and I am sure that you know people rarely respond to you via email.
2. A Blog Without Comments Isn’t a Blog
A blog is made for communication between the readers and its author. Without that two way communication, readers can’t share their thoughts and communicate with you.
Let say you read a very good article on someone blog and you really felt thankful or happy, wouldn’t you want to leave a comment? Or just the opposite if you hated it.
3. User Generated Content Means less Work for You
User generated contents is a good source of content for your blog. If you were to go on vacation and stop blogging, then the comments can serve as content for readers to read and reply to. Your page view can be expected to stay the same also in enabling comments.
Content equal traffic and allowing comments means your readers are helping to generate that content, which mean more traffic for the blog and less work for you.
4. A Blog Is a Community
A community is when everyone can have their voice heard and that is what the blog comment system allows. If you delete that, you delete the community and readers will no longer have a sense of belonging to your blog.
5. Your RSS Readers Have Very Little Reason to Visit Without Comments
The real money is made on the blog itself because monetizing a RSS Feed is far more difficult. The best way to make money off the RSS is to get readers to visit the blog and comments are one of the best ways to do that.
Unless a reader subscribes to the comment RSS, the reader would need to visit the blog in order to check out the comments. If commenting wasn’t allowed, then readers have no reason to visit.
6. Getting Comments Is Very Rewarding
One of the biggest complaints that bloggers have is that they don’t get too much comments. When they do get a comment, they feel absolutely great because it prove someone was reading their stuff and liked it enough to leave them a comment.
