Natural Treatment of Hiccups

Hiccups are one of the most annoying involuntary reflex actions. Any sort of irritation caused in the diaphragm muscles results in erratic breathing producing sound. Other possible causes for hiccups could be hot spicy food, lung infection, stomach problem, kidney disorder, sudden excitement, overeating and eating too fast.

The average hiccup spell can last from a few minutes to a few hours, but some people suffer from extended episodes that last days, months or even years. Hiccups that last longer than 48 hours are called persistent hiccups,and if they've lasted more than a month, you have intractable hiccups.

Treatment:

1. In 2 cups of water boil 5-6 crushed green cardamoms. Boil it till reduces to 1 cup. Allow it cool down and strain it. Drink it slowly when still lukewarm. This is highly beneficial natural remedy for hiccups as it soothes the irritation in diaphragms.

2. There are many home remedies for hiccups. Holding your breath is one of them. Others find relief in drinking cold water, gargling while holding one's breath, coughing, sneezing, putting a pinch of salt on the back of the tongue, breathing into a paper bag or a sharp yank on the tongue. Being startled can also stop hiccups in some people.

3. Wait for 5 minutes before you begin any hiccup remedy regimen! In our experience and observations close to 90% of all hiccups will simply go away on their own within this time frame. If after that 5 minutes has elapsed and you still find yourself hiccuping try your tried and true method for curing the hiccups.

4. Eating a bowl full of yogurt with a pinch of salt is also a good home remedy.

5. Touching a spoon against the uvula repeatedly while you try to breathe in, breathing into a bag, drinking water from the back side of a glass, massaging your neck, pulling on your tongue, sudden fright, pressing on your eyeball, or holding your breath.

6. Doctors sometimes recommend inhalation of increased concentrations of carbon dioxide. An easy way is to cover nose and mouth with a paper bag and breathe in and out into it for a couple of minutes. A tranquillizer such as chlorpromazine may also be prescribed to control the symptoms.

7. Black Pepper (Piper nigrum)

Inhaling black pepper powder can induce a person to sneezing. Sneezing is a violent movement of the respiratory tract. Therefore, it can put an end to hiccoughs.

8. In case of children with hiccoughs, a spoonful of peanut butter or honey is a good remedy. It should be swallowed at once, without retaining it in the mouth. Alternatively, a spoonful of curds sweetened with sugar can also be given to children.

9. The problem with hiccups is, they are usually different for everyone. You may have to experiment with a few different things before they will go away, and this is why the answer to how to get rid of hiccups seems so hard to find. But everyone is different, and everyone's hiccups are different, so there is no cure-all that will work for every case of hiccups every single time.
