Air Cleaner For Dust Mite Allergy
Dust Mites are one of the most common allergy and asthma triggers known. Too small to been seen by the human eye, they are only 100-300 microns in size. But if you have been diagnosed with a dust mite allergy, your sneezing, coughing, congestion, watery eyes, and runny nose are constant reminders that they are there. Since dust mites feed on airborne pollutants such as dander, and dust, in addition to dead skin cells, finding an air cleaner to remove their food source is an effective and ecologically friendly way to diminish the dust mites in your home. Here are 4 tips on selecting and using an air cleaner for dust mites.
- Invest in a high efficiency particle arresting (HEPA) air cleaner that is capable of removing particulates as small as .3 microns. (A micron is defined as one millionth of a meter.) Since most dust mites are 100-300 microns, a HPEA air cleaner designed to remove pollutants as small as .3 microns will trap and kill the dust mites, who often become airborne as you shake or rearrange the bed covers, as well as many of the other airborne pollutants that serve as their food source.
- Measure the space you need to clean. Be sure to factor in the height of your ceilings. Even the best air cleaner will prove ineffective if it is placed in an area bigger that it was designed to clean.
- Place your air cleaner in the bedroom. Dust mites flourish in places that are dark, warm, and moist with optimum temperature between 33 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. That makes the bedroom, particularly your bed, a haven for dust mites. Placing your air cleaner in the bedroom attacks the dust mites at the source of the problem by eliminating huge numbers of them before they have a chance to multiply.
- Allow your HEPA air cleaner to run continuously. This will keep the number of pollutants to a minimum all the time allowing your bedroom to be a haven for you and not the dust mites.
Nothing can rid your home completely of dust mites, but using a HEPA air cleaner will significantly reduce the dust mites and their airborne food sources in your home thereby improving indoor air quality. And improving indoor air quality has been proven to increase quality of life for all.
