A Case Of Cheating By Foreign Students In Australia
The state of New South Wales in Australia is now known to have made a landmark action against a group of foreign students. NSW’s University of New England has decided to cancel the master’s degrees awarded to about 210 international students from 2004 to 2006.
NSW has been one of the havens for international students. That is because the universities in the Australian state provide quality teaching and research opportunities, with their reputation in providing quality education amongst the best. Thus, many foreign students, mostly from Asian countries, flock into the state to get their degrees no matter how expensive it could get. But now, many people are reviewing whether such students come to study at NSW because of the quality of education or because of convenience.
An immense cheating incidence conducted by many foreign students from 2004 to 2006 is changing how people interpret the influx of foreign students into Sydney. Now, experts think that international students are coming to the city to earn college and masters degrees for the sake of convenience. In the case of the cheating incidences, the students were found to have plagiarized their respective theses. This shows that these foreign students believed they could always get away with their misdeeds.
What was more interesting about the case was that the University of New England was not able to find out about the massive incidence of cheating until the end of 2006, when a foreign student gave a tip about what other international students had been doing. It turned out the student wanted to earn his degree ‘the right and proper way’.
The case raised concerns about the status of education provided to international students in NSW. However, many academes still insist that the problem was not in the system but in the foreign students, who show off their unlikely attitudes and characteristics.
